As we look to the future of the Theatre Royal Nelson, we invite our community to help secure its next chapter through the establishment of the Theatre Royal Nelson Fund.
Built in 1878 and carefully refurbished between 2005 and 2010, the Theatre Royal Nelson is the oldest purpose-built operating wooden theatre in Australasia and a Category I Historic Place. Within its beautifully restored walls, generations have gathered to perform, to applaud, to laugh, to reflect, to be moved.
The Fund is about more than maintaining a building. It is about protecting a place where courage is found under stage lights, where young performers step into confidence, where stories are shared, and where community comes together in a way that only live theatre allows.
Over time, we envisage the Fund helping to:
- Safeguard this treasured heritage theatre so it remains a living part of Nelson’s story
- Nurture artistic talent by ensuring a professional stage for local performers, schools, and community groups
- Welcome remarkable artists from across Aotearoa and beyond
- Keep the theatre vibrant, technically excellent, and ready for whatever the next generation imagines
A gift to the Community Fund is a gift to the future. Together, we can ensure the curtain continues to rise, the lights continue to glow, and future generations experience the same magic that has filled this space for nearly 150 years.
