September is wills month!
7 September, 2020

You don’t need to be wealthy to consider leaving a charitable gift in your will.  In fact, for many people, leaving a gift in their will is a more achievable way of fulfilling their long-term charitable goals.  “Often circumstances dictate that we can’t give as generously as we would like to during our lifetime,” says Top of the South Executive Officer, Gavin Larsen.  “A gift in your will can make a huge difference for community groups for years to come, but costs you nothing now.”

Wills Month is an initiative of Community Foundations of New Zealand, and highlights the importance of having your wishes known after you pass on.  Donors may leave a specific amount, or gift a percentage of their estate which can be capped at a nominated amount.  Your bequested funds can be directed towards causes that are close to your heart, or you can nominate the Trustees of the Foundation to make decisions on your behalf.  The Top of the South Community Foundation is one of 17 community foundations throughout New Zealand.  As more and more New Zealander’s understand the benefits of creating a lasting legacy for their local community, there has been a related growth in the work of Community Foundations around the country.  Donations and bequests made to the Top of the South Foundation are invested in perpetuity (with professional investment manager Forsyth Barr), with the investment income used to provide annual grants to local charities and community groups.  The Community Foundation model is a unique one, which provides a long-term sustainable alternative to traditional charitable giving. It is our point-of-difference for sure, and what draws people to Community Foundations as their vehicle for giving.”, said Larsen.

It’s easy to give and get (your tax) back

Giving to local causes can go even further than you might realise. In Aotearoa, donations to registered charities are eligible for a 33 percent tax credit, up to the amount of tax you’ve paid. That means you can claim back a third of your gift, putting more support behind the people, projects, and places you care about in Te Tauihu. It’s a simple way to make generosity work harder, while keeping your giving local.
