Everyone Deserves to Feel the Sand Between Their Toes
4 June, 2026

For many people, a day at Kaiteriteri Beach is something they take for granted.

A walk across the sand. A swim in the sea. Time spent with family and friends in one of Te Tauihu's most loved places.

But for people with limited mobility, those simple experiences can be difficult or, in some cases, impossible.

That's why Kaiteriteri Recreation Reserve has been working to make the beach more accessible for everyone.

With support from donors through the Top of the South Community Foundation, the Reserve has introduced a Mobi Beach Chair and beach access mats, helping people with reduced mobility safely access the sand and water.

The project also included upgrades to an existing beachside bathroom, with features such as an adult change table, handrails, hot water, a wider doorway, and improved accessibility throughout the space.

Together, these additions are helping remove barriers that have prevented some people from fully enjoying everything Kaiteriteri has to offer.

A Moment That Says It All

Sometimes the impact of a project is best understood through a single experience.

Recently, a young man visited Kaiteriteri with his family. Using the Mobi Beach Chair, he was able to get into the water safely and comfortably.

As he played in the sea, other children naturally gathered around him, joining in and sharing the experience.

It was an ordinary day at the beach. But for his family, it was much more than that.

Moments like these remind us that accessibility isn't simply about equipment or facilities. It's about belonging. It's about ensuring everyone can participate in the places and experiences that bring communities together.

What Community Giving Makes Possible

Projects like this are only possible because of the generosity of local donors who choose to invest in the wellbeing of their community.

By supporting initiatives that improve access and inclusion, donors help create opportunities that many of us might never think twice about, but that can make a meaningful difference in someone's life.

Thanks to the commitment of Kaiteriteri Recreation Reserve and the support of community donors, more people can now experience the joy of a day at the beach.

Because everyone deserves the chance to feel the sand between their toes.
