A Well-Earned Honour for Our Local Sea Cadets
10 June, 2026

Earlier this year our CEO Chelsea Routhan had the privilege of being part of a special moment for TS Talisman — the presentation of the Royal New Zealand Naval Association Trophy, the Sea Cadet Corps' National Efficiency Award.

Originally scheduled for their 2025 End of Year Parade, the trophy was presented by Wing Commander Bruce Creedy, Commandant New Zealand Cadet Forces. This was a proud occasion for the cadets, their families, and everyone who supports them.

Philanthropy in Action

The Sea Cadet Corps here in our region is generously supported through a named endowment fund from the wonderful Wares family. This is philanthropy in action, investing in young people, building leadership, discipline, and community.

This kind of lasting generosity is exactly what the Top of the South Community Foundation exists to facilitate — connecting donors with the causes they care most about, and ensuring that support continues long into the future.

What is the Sea Cadet Corps?

The Sea Cadet Corps (also known as Navy Cadets) is open to young New Zealanders who want to develop real-world skills in sailing, seamanship, leadership, and teamwork, all while being part of a close-knit and supportive team. No prior experience is needed. Training covers everything from parade nights and regattas through to first aid, navigation, and the Duke of Edinburgh's Hillary Award.
